Mobile Access Towers

Mobile Access Towers - Operator Training Programme

Introduction:

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require that every employer shall ensure that no person engages in any activity, including organisation, planning and supervision, in relation to work at height or work equipment for use in such work unless he is competent to do so or, if being trained, is being supervised by a competent person. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require that user of work equipment receive “adequate”training. The aim of this course is to instruct an operator to safely erect, use, move and dismantle a mobile access tower, and to reach the required standard to obtain a five year certificate of competence and I.D. card.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course the trainee will be aware of the relevant health and safety regulations, be aware of accident prevention and control, be aware of the needs regarding personal protection, be aware of the need to refer to the Manufacturers Instruction Manual and to understand the correct procedures to safely erect, move and dismantle mobile access towers.

Course Entry Criteria:

At present there are no specific requirements. It is, however, desirable that all applicants should be reasonably literate, have no physical disabilities that would preclude them from being considered competent in the erection/dismantling of mobile access towers and to be in possession of the correct personal protective equipment (safety footwear, hard hat, gloves etc) to carry out the practical sessions.

The programme will consist of the following subjects:

• Facilities introduction, i.d. cards overview.
• Pre-course theory test
• Tower categories
• Structural parts
• Regulations ( HSWA, PUWER, WAHR, RIDDOR, PPE)
• Risk assessment / safe system of work
• Pre-use inspections / care / maintenance
• Safe erection, moving and dismantling methods & hazards
• Tower inspection criteria / tagging systems
• Post course theory test (80% pass mark)
• Practical training – erecting and dismantling a typical tower
• Practical assessment (80% pass mark)
• Course evaluation

Training Method:

Seminar and practical sessions, with assessments.

Duration:

This is a 1 day course - 08:00 – 16:30
